Tasting notes

90 Points Wine & Spirits Magazine.   Deep Purple (the color, not the band) fills the glass. Aromas of vio- let fruit and a hint of scorched earth fill the room. Silky dark fruit with layers of savory earth, dark fruit and smoke create a woven and plush feel to the flavors. Get a good long book to enjoy with the finish of berries cocoa and tobac- co. Wow.

Production notes

Whole Berry Fermentation at cooler temperatures creates deep, dark fruit flavors, while a touch of co-fermented Viognier brightens the nose and darkens the color. The addition of Stone Tree Malbec and new oak adds supple spice, while the neutral barrels add weight and substance. 700 cases made

Bergevin Lane 2013 Columbia Valley She-Devil Syrah  $24, 90pts, (02/18)    The She-Devil is savory and floral in 2013, with a scent of pine tips and violet candy, a hint of stem-spice and purple plum. The plum flavors are lean and lacy, with finesse to the tannins that would pair with lamb chops. (782 cases)

Double Gold, San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition

Rand Sealy, Review of Washington Wines:
2013 Bergevin Lane “She Devil” Syrah, Columbia Valley ($24)
This fine value offers a deep ruby color and rich aromas of blackberry, huckleberry, cassis, rosebuds, bayberry, lavender, tobacco and spiced incense. The thick true to variety flavors are intermixed with licorice, cocoa, roasted coffee beans and earth. The back picks up pressed berries, roasted nuts, crème de cassis and charcoal, followed by a ripe moderate tannin finish that is lifted by bright fruit acids. 18.5/20 points

The 2013 growing started slowly, with an extended bloom period due to cool- er than average temperatures. After bloom we couldn’t have programmed bet- ter growing conditions. Very warm days and cool clear nights were the norm. A few scattered thunderstorms hit sections of the growing area but there was no significant rainfall after early June, allowing for precise canopy management. Through July and August we had warmer than normal temperatures and no rainfall. Harvest ended up starting about a week early from the warm sites, but as things cooled off we were able slow down thing in the Walla Walla valley and allow the fruit to get fully mature for perfect flavors. Over all the 2013 vin- tage will prove to be an excellent vintage.
